FPSL Tie-Breakers
Tiebreakers used in PADA Fairmount Park Summer League
REGULAR SEASON TIE-BREAKERS
Since Summer League 2004, teams enter the post-season brackets based on their overall league record. To help avoid ‘run ups’ in score in games that are not close, game score will not be used to break any ties between any two teams at any point during the REGULAR season. The conscious risk is that after we exhaust the non point-related tie-breakers listed below we will have to resort to a coin flip. We are willing to trade that very remote circumstance because we think there will be many more ‘blowouts’ than there will be teams still tied after we exhaust the following tie-breakers. Point differential is fine for a competitive tournament environment, but that’s not what we’re going for in PADA SL.
Tiebreakers for 2 teams who have same overall record
- Head to Head
- Division Record (meaningless if all games are played within your division)
- Strength of Victory (cumulative record of the teams you beat)
- Coin Flip
Tiebreakers for 3 or more teams – as above (Note: If two teams remain tied after third or other teams are eliminated during any step, tie breaker reverts to step 1 of the two-team format). Tie-breaking scheme derived from NFL.
POST-SEASON ROUND ROBIN (POOL PLAY) TIE-BREAKERS
Standard UPA tie-breakers INCLUDING point differentials.
See UPA round robin tie-breakers.

See http://www2.upa.org/files/events/formats/FormatManual3.01_approved2004.pdf or latest UPA Formats Manual for details and examples and implementation. (Suggestion: Work with the book once you are in anything more than a 3-way with an easily calculated point differential.).
